Hot-rolled carbon steel is the easiest and cheapest to find. It is fairly malleable and can be easily shaped with hand tools. However, its size and surface quality are inferior to those of cold-rolled carbon steel plates. As the name suggests, it is usually manufactured in a hot rolling process. Here’s how it’s made:
Raw steel – pickling – heating – hot rolling (until desired thickness) – cooling – cutting to size – inspection – testing – packaging.
It is very strong and has good shape memory, making it ideal for springs and wire.
Compared with low-carbon and medium-carbon steel plates, high-carbon steel has the greatest strength and hardness. However, high-carbon steel is less ductile than mild steel, which means it is more difficult to machine or shape.
Like medium carbon steels, high carbon steels can also be heat treated to further increase hardness and wear resistance for applications where the steel is exposed to particularly high stresses.
The high carbon content of high carbon plate grades gives them great strength, hardness, and wear resistance, properties ideal for applications where steel must often withstand extreme wear without breaking, such as cutting and chisel tools.
