Tinplate products include electrolytic tinplate, electrolytic chrome-plated steel (tin-free steel or TFS), and blackboard (uncoated steel). Approximately 90% of the world’s tinworks products are used by the container industry to make cans, caps, and caps for the food and beverage industry. The rest of the production goes to auto parts, racks, computer cases, telecommunication cables, cooking utensils, and more. Blackboard (essentially clean, light-gauge cold-rolled steel, see steelmaking) for coating comes directly from a temper mill or twin rolling mill. Cold rolling mill to coating line. This product is commonly referred to as tin-free steel or TFS and follows the same processing sequence as electrolytic tinplate. Paint lines are mechanically similar. During electrowinning, chromium and chromium oxide are deposited. Metallic chrome coatings are applied at a rate of 5.0 milligrams (mg)/sq per surface—foot area. The oxide film ranges from 0.7 to 2.0 milligrams (mg)/sq. feet, but is usually at the lower end of the range. Tin factory products are produced with specific standardized product characteristics, including terminology, composition, mechanical properties, surface finish, coating weight, etc. ASTM standard specifications detail these properties. There are two grades of tinplate. Standard-grade tinplate has optimum properties and can be lacquered and printed. While second-grade tinplate is a rejection of standard-grade tinplate. Tinplate can be of different tempers, which depend on the quality of steel as well as the different production steps such as hot rolling, annealing, and temper rolling. Tinplate comes in different finishes such as bright, light-stone, stone, matt, and silver.

1. Corrosion Resistance: The tin layer acts as a barrier, effectively preventing oxygen and moisture from contacting the steel, delaying rusting, and extending service life.
2. Non-toxic: Tin itself is non-toxic and meets the hygiene standards for food and pharmaceutical packaging, ensuring product safety.
3. High Strength: The steel substrate provides good strength, able to withstand certain pressure and impact, protecting the contents.
