PPGL is a color-coated galvanized steel sheet, also known as pre-coated steel sheet, coil-coated steel sheet, color-coated steel sheet, etc., usually using hot-dip galvanized steel sheet as the base material.
The term is an extension of GL, the traditional abbreviation for galvalume steel. Today, the term GL usually refers to pure z55%Al/Zn alloy continuous hot-dip steel, rather than the batch dip process. PPGL means factory pre-painted galvalume, ie the steel is painted before forming, rather than post-painted after forming.
The hot-dip metal coating process is also used to manufacture steel sheets and coils with aluminum coatings or zinc/aluminum, zinc/iron, and zinc/aluminum/magnesium alloy coatings, which can also be pre-painted at the factory. While GL may sometimes be used as a collective term for various hot-dipped metal-coated steels, it is more accurate to refer only to galvanized steel. Similarly, PPGL can sometimes be used as an umbrella term for a range of prepainted metal-coated steels, but more commonly refers more precisely to prepainted AZ-coated steels.
