Alloy 316/316L is also resistant to pitting in phosphoric and acetic acid. It performs well in boiling 20% phosphoric acid. The alloy can also be used in the food and pharmaceutical process industries where it is utilized to handle hot organic and fatty acids in an effort to minimize product contamination.
Alloy 316 has excellent resistance to atmospheric and chemical corrosion. Also used where high strength at elevated temperatures is required. Like Type 316, it has excellent corrosion resistance, but 316L also has excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding or stress relief. Good corrosion resistance to most chemicals, salts, and acids, and molybdenum content helps resist marine environments. The low carbon content of 316L reduces the potential for in vivo corrosion when medical implants are used—high creep strength at high temperatures. 316L has similar manufacturing characteristics as Types 302 and 304.
Applications of 316L stainless steel plate: biomedical implants, chemical processing, food processing, photography, pharmaceuticals, textile finishing, and ship exterior decoration.
