Carbon Steel Seamless Pipe Process Production:
The process begins with cutting a solid steel round or billet to length and then feeding it into a walking-beam reheat furnace, which reaches temperatures of nearly 2,300°F. After leaving the reheat furnace, the preheated round billet is turned into a tube shell by high-speed cross-rolling between two barrel rolls in a rotary piercer. The seamless shell enters the mandrel mill and rolls on the retained mandrel to provide the required outer diameter and wall thickness for the next process. The process is carefully monitored using a state-of-the-art thermal wall measurement system. The shells are then reheated for final shaping in a 24-stand draw reducer where the outer diameter is formed to the customer’s exacting specifications. Verify wall thickness again using a hot wall measurement system. After rotating and advancing on the walking beam cooling bed, the pipes are cut in batches and transferred to the processing storage area, where they are carried by computer-controlled gantry cranes.
