Tinplate is a lightweight cold-rolled mild carbon steel plate or strip coated with commercially pure tin on both sides. Thus, it combines the strength and formability of steel with the corrosion resistance, solderability, and good looks of tin in one material. Within this broad description, there exists today an extremely broad range of products that are tailored to meet specific end-use requirements. The production of the steel base and its subsequent tin coating are independent of each other, so any set of properties in the steel can theoretically be combined with any tin coating. The composition of the steel used in tinplate is strictly controlled according to the grade chosen and the way in which it is processed, various types with different formability (“temper”) can be processed. Tinplate is sold in a variety of steel thicknesses starting from around 0.5mm to 0.13mm. Steel can be coated with different thicknesses of tin, and even different thicknesses (different coatings) can be produced on both sides to meet the different conditions of the inner and outer surfaces of the container. A variety of surface finishes are also produced for different applications. The T5 Tinplate Coil is specially passivated to stabilize the surface and improve paint adhesion; it also comes with a very thin oil film to improve its handling and build properties. Of course, this oil is food-compatible. The resulting variety of materials provides users with great flexibility of choice and the ability to precisely select the correct material for a given end-use.
